Debunking the common myth that coffee “sobers you up”

After drinking with friends or just enjoying a night out with someone special, you know you need to “sober up” before getting behind the wheel. If you are like many others, you may reach for the coffee, thinking if you drink enough, it will reduce your blood alcohol level and allow you to drive home safely.

The idea is that the caffeine in the coffee will help them sober up; however, this is not the case.

Coffee does not alter how intoxicated you are

Coffee may help you feel more alert because of the caffeine. It is not unusual to feel sleepy and worn out after drinking. Your BAC may also drop slightly in the time you take to get the cup of coffee and drink it.

While this is true, the coffee will not alter your intoxication level. It will not help you sober up. The only thing that results in a lower BAC is time. This means that if you grab a cup of coffee, but your BAC still exceeds the legal limit in Texas, and you are pulled over, you will (likely) be charged with DWI.

Legal rights and options when facing DWI charges

If you are arrested and charged with DWI, you are likely concerned about the consequences of a conviction. This is natural since this charge can carry jail time, fines and other penalties. It can also impact your job and personal relationships.

After being arrested for DWI, learning your legal rights and options is best. There are viable defenses you can use against the charges, and getting started with building a defense is something you should do immediately.
