Opioids are considered one of the most abused groups of drugs today. While they have some medical use, there’s also a high potential for addiction and dependence.

The lasting effects of opioid use
When someone begins taking opioids, they experience a euphoric feeling caused by the release of endorphins which flood the brain. Along with reducing physical pain, opioids have a psychological effect.
As time passes, people taking opioids will develop a tolerance for them. Because of this, they must take more and more to feel “normal” and eliminate the negative effects caused by withdrawal.
Risks of opioid dependency and addiction
It’s possible for anyone to become addicted to opioids if they take them for an extended amount of time. However, certain situations and circumstances increase the possibility of addiction. A huge factor related to legal medication is not taking the drug properly (i.e., taking more to create feelings of euphoria).
Addiction is also affected by external factors. Individuals who have suffered from substance abuse in the past (themselves or in their family) are at a higher risk of addiction problems. Also, those under excess stress or dealing with mental health issues are at a higher risk.
